DLSS 4 vs FSR 4: Which Upscaler Wins?

Both are ML-based now. The gap narrowed — but it didn't close.

⚔️
NVIDIA Green vs AMD Red — the upscaling war

Quick Verdict

DLSS 4 still wins on image quality, frame generation quality, and game support. FSR 4 is a massive leap over FSR 3 and finally competitive — but only on RX 9000-series cards. If you have an RTX card, DLSS is the obvious choice. If you have an RX 9070/9070 XT, FSR 4 is genuinely good. Anything older AMD: you're stuck with FSR 3.x quality.

DLSS 4 — What's New

  • Transformer-based super resolution — replaces the CNN model used since DLSS 2. Sharper, fewer artifacts in motion.
  • Multi Frame Generation — RTX 50 only. Generates up to 3 frames per rendered frame (4x effective FPS).
  • Ray Reconstruction — better RT denoising, available on all RTX cards.
  • Backwards compatible — RTX 20/30/40 owners still get the new transformer model via DLSS Override.

FSR 4 — What's New

  • ML-based for the first time — FSR 1-3 were spatial/temporal; FSR 4 uses on-die ML accelerators.
  • RX 9000 series only — RDNA 4 has dedicated AI hardware. Older RDNA 2/3 cards stay on FSR 3.x.
  • Frame Generation 2.0 — improved over FSR 3 FG, fewer ghosting artifacts.
  • Open source path — AMD still publishes the algorithm; the ML model is RDNA-4-locked but the rest is portable.

Game Support

DLSS: 600+ games at last count, with day-1 support for nearly every AAA release. FSR 4:~30 games at launch, growing — but most new games still ship FSR 3 first. AMD's strategy of upgradeable presets helps: many FSR 3 games can be force-upgraded to FSR 4 via driver overlay on RX 9000.

Which Should You Use?

RTX 50 ownerDLSS 4 + Multi Frame Gen — no contest
RTX 40/30/20 ownerDLSS 4 transformer model (no MFG)
RX 9070/9070 XT ownerFSR 4 — finally competitive
RX 7000 / 6000 ownerFSR 3.1 (FSR 4 not supported)

Bottom Line

DLSS 4 is the better tech in 2026, and the gap is mostly about game support, not raw quality anymore. FSR 4 is finally good enough that AMD GPUs are no longer disadvantaged in upscaler-heavy titles. If you're cross-shopping RTX 5070 Ti vs RX 9070 XT, upscaling is no longer the deciding factor — performance, price, and ecosystem features are.
