Editing rewards different silicon than gaming: encoders, VRAM, and decode support matter more than frame rates. Here is how to pick for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.
A gaming benchmark tells you almost nothing about how a GPU edits video. Timeline playback lives and dies on hardware decode support for your camera's codec. Export speed depends on the hardware encoder. Effects, color grading, and noise reduction lean on compute and VRAM. Those three things do not scale together, which is why a used last-gen flagship often beats a new midrange card for editing while losing to it in games.
Encoders First: NVENC, AV1, and Friends
Nvidia's NVENC remains the reference hardware encoder: mature, fast, and supported by everything. RTX 40 and 50 series cards encode AV1, the codec YouTube and streaming platforms increasingly prefer, and higher-tier cards carry dual encoders that Premiere and Resolve can use to nearly halve long exports. VRAM pressure comes from resolution, bit depth, and stacked effects more than clip length. If you grade 10-bit footage with noise reduction in Resolve, treat 16GB as your floor.
