The PSU is the one component that can take everything else down with it. Here is how much wattage each GPU tier actually needs, and how to handle the 12VHPWR connector safely.
A modern graphics card is the hungriest part in your PC, and it does not draw power politely. It spikes, it transients, and on high-end cards it does all of that through a small 16-pin connector with a documented history of melting when it is not seated properly. Wattage Recommendations by GPU Tier
These are practical recommendations for a full system with a modern 8-core-class CPU, not bare-minimum figures. If you run a heavily overclocked CPU or a wall of storage and RGB, size up one bracket.

80 Plus ratings (Bronze, Gold, Platinum, Titanium) measure how much wall power becomes usable DC power instead of heat. Gold is the sweet spot: the efficiency gain from Gold to Platinum rarely pays for itself on a gaming PC, while the jump from a bare 80 Plus unit to Gold usually comes with better components across the board.
One nuance worth knowing: PSUs are most efficient at around 50% load. A 1000W Gold unit running a 500W system sits right in its efficiency peak, runs its fan slower, and lives longer. Oversizing within reason is a feature, not waste.
When Your Old PSU Is Fine
Not every GPU upgrade needs a new power supply. Keep your existing unit if all of these are true:
- It is a reputable brand and under roughly 7 years old
- Its wattage meets the bracket in the table above with headroom to spare
- The new card uses standard 8-pin PCIe connectors, or your PSU has a native 16-pin cable
- You have had no shutdowns, coil-whine changes, or fan-grinding from it
